EarWell Infant Ear Correction System

The EarWell Centers of Texas provides the first non-surgical device, the EarWell Infant Ear Correction System, to correct infant ear deformities. The EarWell inventor, Dr. Steve Byrd is an authority on infant ear molding to correct infant ear deformities. The EarWell™ Infant Ear Correction System is the only medical device to be scientifically studied with published outcome data in refereed medical journals.

What Is The EarWell Infant Ear Correction System?

The EarWell™ Infant Ear Correction System is an FDA-approved, non-surgical, painless solution for correcting ear deformities in the first two weeks of life. Research shows that 25%-35% of newborns are affected by infant ear deformity. While a portion of these deformities will self-correct, for those children whose condition requires intervention, the revolutionary EarWell™ Infant Ear Correction System can mold the ears into shape (usually within 4-6 weeks), avoiding the likelihood of ear correction surgery (otoplasty) later in life. Since no physician can predict if the ear deformity will self-correct, conditions that are left untreated often leave parents to wait and worry about their child’s misshapen ears.

EarWell™ Infant Ear Correction System: Non-Surgical Ear Molding

The EarWell™ Infant Ear Correction System was co-developed in 2010 by renowned, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steve Byrd, whose work in ear reconstruction is so well respected, he has come to be known as “the ear doctor” among the DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) metropolitan area pediatricians. Before the EarWell™ System was invented, doctors typically monitored ear deformities until patients were 5-7 years old, at which time, an otoplasty to correct the ears would be performed if necessary. During this waiting period, many children experienced anxiety due to teasing or self-consciousness about their appearance.

This anxiety and uncertainty for both parents and children got Dr. Byrd and his colleagues thinking that an easier way to treat ear deformities could be possible. Rather than waiting to see how the ears developed and then undergoing an invasive surgery, why not preempt the process and shape the ears non-surgically while the ears are malleable? Find out if your baby is a candidate for the EarWell™ Infant Ear Correction System.

The EarWell™ System, most effective when placed within 7 to 10 days after birth, alleviates any concern that your child may grow up being teased about his/her ears. In addition, the EarWell™ System eliminates the possibility of any discomfort associated with having a reconstructive surgical procedure, as well as the need for undergoing anesthesia which, while safe, always involves some risk. By using the EarWell™ Infant Ear Correction System, your child’s ears will be non-surgically molded into an aesthetically pleasing shape within 2 months, and the results are permanent with no need for further ear treatment.

How the EarWell™ Infant Ear Correction System Works

Newborn babies naturally have elevated estrogen levels due to being in utero. An enzyme in the body called hyaluronidase interacts with estrogen, and one of the results of this interaction is cartilage flexibility. Over the next few weeks of the infant’s life, estrogen levels decrease and the ear cartilage begins to stiffen. When ear deformity is identified and addressed within 2 weeks of birth, the ear cartilage is still pliable and can be easily shaped. The EarWell™ Infant Ear Correction System capitalizes on the ear’s pliability at birth by using a series of interlocking molds which shape the ear with gentle pressure while it is soft, and secure it in place as the cartilage hardens. The result is a beautifully shaped ear by the time the infant is approximately 2 months old.
